The course aims at providing advanced knowledge about the English language, how the English language works.

The course will allow you to improve your use of the language and also be ready to give clear and solid explanations to your own students.

It will also help you to improve your pronunciation, applying the new knowledge of phonology and practising how the sounds are articulated. Then you will be able to use this knowledge when teaching your own classes.

Course Characteristics

This course offers two different modalities. See how they work:

Mode 1: you can watch the pre-recorded lessons, which reproduce the real class, anytime you want to (Self-Study)

Mode 2: you can be part of the live virtual classes. You will meet the teacher and classmates in a virtual room which integrates audio, interactive board and the use of webcam for those who want to use it at a pre-arranged time. The classes last approximately 60-120 minutes each.

The course will requiere 80 hours (30 hours of input lessons, 50 hours individual work on the platform, plus self-study).

The course is thought to be done in 3 - 6 months. This may vary according to each person’s pace, so you can choose to do the course over a longer period of time.

Courses Format 

There are different types of courses. 

Short courses: Essential, Essential Plus, which deal with specific topics and Complete Courses: In Depth, Mastering English, which deal with wider areas of knowledge.

The length and duration are different for each type of course. You can do the short courses one by one and get credits for a complete course certificate, or you can do the complete course at once (In-Depth, Mastering English) which will include all the topics offered in the Essential courses.

It is the ideal course for in-service teachers or teacher trainees who teach these structures and want to improve their own pronunciation and their students’.

The course will provide a thorough understanding of the language as well as the metalanguage required both to teach your students and to prepare your classes and talk to other teachers.

You will also have acquired a wide knowledge of phonology.

What is needed to do the course?

You just need to have the right level of English and be interested in learning how to teach these topics to your students.

Content

Phonology:

• Study of the English phonetic symbols, working on the correct production of each of them: their place and manner of articulation and the air flow required for a correct pronunciation
• Recognition and production of phonemic scripts
• Grammatical and spelling patterns related to each of the phonemes (past participle and plurals’ pronunciation)
• Analysis of isolated sounds and their different behaviour when in Connected Speech

Language Awareness

• All the verb tenses, their uses, similarities and differences
• Analysis of grammar structures with a deep understanding of their meaning and uses (conditionals, reported speech, unreal pasts &wishes, linking words, verb patterns: gerund-infinitive, etc.).

Course Development

This course can be done in two different modalities:

Course development Mode 1:  the course consists of short pre-recorded lessons, which will effectively guide you throughout the course, providing clear explanations and examples, for you to grasp them at once! It is ideal to work at your own pace and it can be done anytime, anywhere. (self-study). See how the recorded lessons are.

Course development Mode 2:  The course consists of live lessons of approximately 60-120 minutes each, done in a virtual room which integrates audio, interactive board and the use of webcam for those who want to use it. There are approximately 30 lessons. You will be interacting with your classmates and tutor, being able to ask any questions along the course. The time is set. You choose the one convenient to you. See how the virtual meetings are.

In both modalities, you will have access to our Virtual Campus where you will do some practice online and check the assignments after each class. Study notes for each lesson are available there.

All the material needed for the course will be provided.

Assessment

Upon completion of the first term you will do a quiz with a similar format to the final test.

At the end of the course, you will have a final exam which evaluates what has been learnt in terms of Phonology and Language Awareness.

The tests are done completely online in our Virtual Campus.

Certificates awarded

You will receive a Statement of Completion for you to save and print.

This will show that you have successfully completed this course.

It will also state that this is one of the modules leading to a TEFL Certificate.

Credits obtained

60 credits for 230-Hour TTC Course: Teacher's Certificate in TEFL or 150-Hour Teacher’s Certificate in TEFL
